There are many online travel agencies like Hotels.com, Expedia, Booking.com, etc. that have big ads all over the internet implying that when you book with them you will get the lowest rate but that is not the case. Dealing directly with the innkeeper is the best way to book as they have full control over the rates and rooms. If you see a lower rate they will be sure to work with matching that rate given the dates.
Online travel agencies (OTAs) take a substantial cut every time you book through one of them. The money is taken away from the inn and given to large corporations. Therefore taking away money used for the upkeep of a historical building, improved amenities, and the ability to keep our prices lower.
Booking directly gives you the ability to get to know the person who is going to make your stay as comfortable as possible. You will be able to get advice for things to do in the area and have any questions answered about the property as well.
If an emergency happens and you have to change your plans, you won't have to deal with the pain of having a 3rd party involved. You will deal directly with the innkeeper who will be able to help with the next steps in resolving the situation at hand.
OTAs promote on their ads that they are all competing with each other but in fact Expedia owns Travelocity, Hotels.com, Hotwire, Trivago, Orbitz, and others! Priceline owns Booking.com, Kayak, and others. Some competition! If you did see a lower price, you could simply tell the innkeeper and be assured of getting that price.
